COVID-19 Business Interruption Insurance

Claims in Ontario

Business interruption insurance protects businesses from lost income following a disaster (potentially including disasters like the global COVID-19 pandemic and the associated government business shutdowns ordered by the government).

Business interruption insurance is especially common amongst commercial establishments such as retail stores, bars, restaurants, salons, etc and professional services firms such as dental clinics, medical offices, accounting and consulting firms, law firms, etc.

Insurers May Try to Deny Business Interruption Insurance Claims Due to COVID-19

Businesses across Toronto and Ontario have been devastated by COVID-19.

Many business interruption policies require physical loss or damage to the business to qualify for access to the policy. This requirement has lead some insurers to interpret policies to exclude the impact of COVID-19.

However, following the SARS epidemic in 2003, endorsements that provide protection for business interruption caused by a disease like COVID-19 were sold by some insurance companies. If you are a business that purchased such an endorsement, you may be in a position to make a claim and we may be able to help.
